Measure W Wins!

San Clemente Supports North Beach Revitalization Plan

San Clemente voters passed Measure W on November 4, endorsing the North Beach Playa del Norte revitalization project by a 7% margin.  The Measure W victory assures the Playa del Norte project will move forward.

Two years ago the City Council unanimously selected The LAB LLC to design a low density, visitor serving project based on a restaurant and small shop theme.  Since then there have been public workshops, two major revisions, and more than a dozen minor revisions to the project.

Plans for Playa del Norte were approaching completion when vocal opposition to the project arose.  At that time the City Council deemed it appropriate to place an advisory measure on the ballot to validate whether or not the public wanted to proceed with the revitalization plans as presently conceived.

With the passage of Measure W the City will go forward with the Environmental Impact Review process for Playa del Norte.  Final plans must conform to the North Beach master parking plan, traffic circulation plan, as well as City and State view corridor requirements.

Playa del Norte will introduce a high quality, appropriately sized commercial and cultural center.  Once completed, local residents can look forward to:

• New open space and view corridors
• Cultural events within a leisurely setting
• Courtyards and lawns for relaxation
• Ocean view restaurants, cafes and food shops
• Spanish Colonial architecture
• Better access to the beach
• Improved parking and traffic circulation
